I just signed up for Care.com since I really needed to hire a sitter and my regular sitter was sick. Wow, is this site useful! I wish I had heard about this before. At around $12 per month (that's if you subscribe for one year), the site is a bargain, considering how much time it takes to find a good quality sitter. I'm pretty picky when it comes to new sitters and unless there's a close personal recommendation there I won't hire one. However, of the three sitters I've hired through Care.com I'm fairly impressed. Good quality, professional sitters who were on time and really cared about doing a good job and keeping good standing with me.
Saves time
The biggest timesaver was being able to shuffle through 30 or 40 well-qualified sitters on the site, seeing clear photos of them (that's important to me) and reading detailed customer reviews. Only takes minutes, where interviewing even just 3 or 4 sitters yourself can take all day.
I've been stuck with a sick sitter too many times. Care.com has a good feature which will find you a last-minute sitter who has been vetted by the community and has tenure who can fill in for a last minute appointment. Not the ideal situation, but better than being stuck in a jam.
Well-mannered, professional sitters so far
So far so good. All the sitters we've met in person have been well-presented, clean and professional. Better than craigslist interviews for sure!
Fair pricing
At $12 per month, you save a lot of time and headache, so its worth it. I save time and have less stress thinking about managing sitters, just outsource it to Care.com. I recommend going for the annual option, its much cheaper than the monthly.

I have been using care.com for so long trying to find a nanny
job. I have my picture, references and a great description. I never
get responses and it is getting so frustrating. It is like the
people read it and cant be courteous enough to say no thank you or
we found someone. This is the worst site i have ever used.
You are preparing to hire a babysitter for the first
time. What all do you need to do to be well prepared for
successfully employing a babysitter?
Determining what job tasks you want the babysitter to
perform (just childcare? feeding? house cleaning? transporting?
administering medications?)
1. Determining what traits and skills you will seek in a
babysitter (based on the job tasks above)
2. Determining what you are willing to pay a babysitter
(usually expressed in dollars per hour worked)
3. Determining what you are willing to do for your
babysitter (transporting her to/from your house, allowing her to
snack on items in your fridge, etc.)
12 bucks a month, try 35/mo. and thats the basic, AND they don't
tell you your CC # will be charged every month, it looks like its a
one-time deal, and then they come back with "well it was in the
print" and you know you've been set up HOW UNAMERICAN!
IF something goes wrong with the caregiver and you post a
complaint, they will just delete her account because I imagine it
makes them look bad, Well guess what they ARE BAD.
